Gold Coast

Welcome to Gold Coast

History

Roughly defined by North Avenue, Lake Shore Drive, Oak Street, and Clark Street, the Gold Coast is part of Chicago’s Near North Side community and is at the heart of Chicago’s rich history - it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

After the destruction of the Great Chicago Fire, Potter Palmer, a millionaire, set up residence and transformed what was one swamp into what is now Lake Shore Drive. As a result of the 42 room mansion he built for himself, wealthy Chicagoans flocked to the neighborhood thus making it one of the richest in Chicago.

That legacy is alive today. Today, the area is a mixture of mansions, row houses, and high-rise apartments and is one of the wealthiest districts in the United States.

Worth Seeing / Things to Do

Many of Chicago’s most famous sights are located in the Gold Coast and there is something to do to match any taste. Those wishing to indulge in a bit of shopping can browse the prestigious shops at Water Tower Place. On hot Chicago summer days, a swim in the lake at the famous Oak Street Beach might be in order. Those desiring a bit of culture could visit the International Museum of Surgical Science or get some reading done at the Newberry Library followed by a delicious meal at Tavern on Rush.

No visit to the Gold Coast would be complete without a visit to Navy Pier, a 3000 foot pier in the Streeterville neighborhood of the Gold Coast. Originally built for military purposes, today Navy Pier is Chicago’s most visited attraction - drawing in over 9 million visitors annually. Navy Pier encompasses over 50 acres of parks, gardens, shops, restaurants, family attractions and exhibition facilities that are sure to please any visitor.
